Map, above: South Stream (Russian: Южный Поток) is a proposed gas pipeline to transport Russian natural gas through the Black Sea to Bulgaria and further to Greece, Italy and Austria. The project is seen as rival to the planned Nabucco pipeline
Signed in November 2012, the investment agreement between Gazprom, France’s EDF, Germany’s Wintershall and Italy’s Eni signalled the launch of the South Stream gas pipeline. Transit countries including Slovenia, Serbia and Bulgaria also signed proposed plans and paved the way for construction to begin. The pipeline will run fromt the Pochinki compressor station in Russia, under the Black Sea to Bulgaria and on to Italy and Austria, effectively bypassing Ukraine – a country widely regarded as an unstable transit route for Russian gas. See below: Hour 4, Block A, Robert Cutler, Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, Carleton University, Canada, on Russian gas, European integration, and the fate of Ukraine.
