Thursday  30 June 2016 / Hour 2, Block D:  Ido Aharoni, in re: his five-year tenure as Israeli Consul-General in New York; BDS; Israeli politics; a thirteen-year-old-girl was stabbed to death by a neighbor in Israel. Her killer, a nineteen-year-old, also died in the event. Two tragedies.  He and the other young people who currently kill at random have been persuaded that being a dead shahadi is better than being a live young man on Earth.  A global politico-philosophical recent shift: “We must defend the victims” across all cultures, nations, time-zones — irrespective of specifics of who, exactly, is the victim.  [more]
In February 2011, Ido Aharoni officially assumed the post of Consul General of Israel in New York, after serving as Acting Consul General since August 2010.  As Consul General, he represents the State of Israel to communities from throughout the tri-state areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He has been a member of Israel’s Foreign Service since the summer of 1991. During his tenure in Israel’s diplomatic corps Aharoni held two overseas positions, in Los Angeles and New York.

Hour Three
Thursday  30 June 2016 / Hour 3, Block A:  Jonathan Schanzer, FDD, in re:  Iran and Turkey.  Iran is milking the JCPOA and the “Iran deal” for all it can get, seeing that Obama and Kerry - fearing that their legacy might be dashed by an Iran that walked away from the deal - press for huge commercial contracts, incl aerospace, for Iran; thee deals are illegal according to standing laws, sanctions, agreements.   Inter al. Mahan Air (Iranian; an arm of the IRGC) has been flying arms to rogue regimes and organizations; same with Caspian Air.  US and Russia will exchange information and promise not to bomb each other in Syria?  This US Adm is phobic of conflict, will deconflict at any cost.   Willing to cower, and now even coordinate with Russia; hard to fathom  Russians and Iran and Assad are all engaging in a level of brutality that hasn't been seen for generations – barrel bombs, bombing hospitals. It’s jaw dropping that the White House praises itself for behavior in Syria - will accept the nightmare if that means the US not going to wars till January.  . . . Evidence that Hezbollah isn't getting the protection it needs so Assad steps in; a shift of assets within the axis.  Still fluid: Hezbollah has lost 1,3000 of its fighters, which is a big chunk.
Since joining FDD in February 2010, Dr. Schanzer has been singularly focused on ensuring that FDD delivers not only accurate and timely research, but also research that is useful to decision makers inside the Beltway, across America, and around the world. Dr. Schanzer brings solid scholarship and public policy credentials to his job of overseeing FDD's research.  He worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers.  A former research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Dr. Schanzer has studied Middle East history in four countries.  Dr. Schanzer is part of the leadership team of FDD’s Center on Sanctions and Illicit Finance, which provides policy and subject matter expertise on the use of financial and economic power to the global policy community.

Thursday  30 June 2016 / Hour 3, Block B:  Malcolm Hoenlein, in re: Russia, EU, UN, __ trying to cook up a deal for years on the Middle East.  It condemns acts of terrorism and incitement; condemns settlements; discusses Gaza.  Becomes part of the series of initiatives – the French Initiative (going nowhere)(and Hollande interferes in the US election by endorsing Mrs Clinton).  Puzzling: since half the French army is employed domestically and drives of citizens are fleeing; and across other parts of Europe – all make it odd for them to jump into US electoral politics.  Why did a 19-year-old dropout commit the stabbing murder of a 13-year-old child?  Incitement from Abbas and his crew. His mother praises her son; she gets a house and money for it.  Imams, schools, UNRWA facilities – a constant diet of hatred and death-dealing; much of he money is coming from Europe, including the queen for Sweden. Many Euro govts continue to flood the Palestinian Authority with money while knowing that it rewards terrorism.  Goes to the heart of BDS.
Thursday  30 June 2016 / Hour 3, Block C: Daniel Treisman, Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Director of the Russia Political Insight project; in re:  Why Putin Took Crimea —The Gambler in the Kremlin.   Why Putin took Crimea: was Russian til the 1950s, when it was transferred to Ukraine.  Brought Christianity to Russia; was the site of a very important war, with many Russian solders burned there.  Certainly was a very popular holiday spot for the Soviet Union – lovely weather and beaches.  Strategically, saw a threat to the Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol. “The most significant event in Putin’s years on power.”  Putin the Defender, or the Imperialist, or the Improviser.  He perceived an attempt by NATO to move next to Russia and moved strongly to defend. Thursday  30 June 2016 / Hour 3, Block D: Daniel Treisman, Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Director of the Russia Political Insight project; in re:  Why Putin Took Crimea —The Gambler in the Kremlin.  Putin the Defender, or the Imperialist, or the Improviser.  He perceived an attempt by NATO to move next to Russia and moved strongly to defend. Or: as a former colonel in the KGB, Putin wanted to expand Russia’s territory back to that of the USSR.  All considered, Prof Treisman finds that less likely.  Or:  taking the Crimea was a last-minute decision. This makes sense in light of the last-minutey decisions, deeds, muddles, that occurred during and after the military actions.  This, plus the fact that the naval port in Sevastopol is flatly critical to Russia, are the most likely reasons for Putin’s invasion. [Note: a great dal more is covered in these two segments than this short report provides.]  https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/ukraine/2016-04-18/why-putin-took-crimea  (2 of 2)

Hour Four
Thursday 30 June 2016 / Hour 4, Block A:  Restless Creatures: The Story of Life in Ten Movements, by Matt Wilkinson (1 of 4)
“….From sprinting cheetah to spinning maple fruit, soaring albatross
to burrowing worm, crawling amoeba to running human—all are the
way they are because of how they move. There is a famous saying:
“nothing in biology makes sense unless in the light of evolution.” As
Wilkinson makes clear: little makes sense unless in the light of
locomotion. A powerful yet accessible work of evolutionary
biology, Restless Creatures is the essential guide for understanding
how life on Earth was shaped by the simple need to move from point
A to point B.”

“Students of evolution are well aware of the beauty inherent in
the process. Matt Wilkinson captures this splendor in Restless
Creatures, a book that views evolution through the lens of
locomotion.” —The Scientist

“It would be hard to find a more companionable guide to the
marvels of locomotory evolution than Matt Wilkinson. In Restless
Creatures, the zoologist and writer rehearses twice-told tales of
animals becoming bilateral, exiting the sea for the land and
evolving flight, but makes them fresh. These are wonderfully
adept and informed explanations of locomotory modes —
whether in birds, gliding snakes, eels, sharks or a host of fossil
vertebrates — and there is not a single vignette that I failed to
learn something from.”—Kevin Padian, Nature

“[I]ntriguing.... With the help of his locomotory worldview, Mr.
Wilkinson goes on to provide [an]...enlightening perspective on
such major evolutionary developments as the transition from
wriggling spineless marine organisms to the first vertebrates, the
movement of fish out of the water and onto dry land, and the
evolution of flight.”—Richard Conniff, Wall Street Journal

“Tracing the evolutionary history of locomotion from single-celled
animals to humans, Wilkinson demonstrates how the need to
move has shaped the living world.... [T]his work deeply
investigates the importance of locomotion to all life forms.”—Library Journal

“Through all of this lucidly detailed narrative, readers see how
evolution endowed life with powers of movement, and how those
powers opened dramatic new possibilities for evolutionary
metamorphoses. An illuminating survey of the evolutionary
dynamics of locomotion.”—Booklist

“[Wilkinson] walks (and swings, and crawls, and swims) through
the history of directed movement.... Wilkinson builds a coherent
historical narrative while touching on a wide variety of biological
topics. Lay readers with some general biology background will
find that he’s managed to connect the dots in a way that makes
sense.”—Publishers Weekly

“[An] ingenious but not-dumbed-down history of life’s 4-billion-
year progress in getting from one place to another.... [Readers]
will come away with a deep understanding of an essential basis
of life.”—Kirkus Reviews

“This marvelous book looks at life from an angle that is novel,
revealing and has been fundamental in evolution: how organisms
move. Writing in an engaging style, Wilkinson explores
movement in everything from pterosaurs to Portuguese men o'
war, showing how movement is organized, and its role in species
diversity. If you want to know how sponges sneeze, why all large
aquatic predators have similar shapes, and how physics affects
the lives of the smallest of organisms, turning water into glue,
this is the book for you. Highly recommended!”—Matthew Cobb, Professor of Zoology at the University of Manchester and author of Life’s Greatest Secret

“Restless Creatures proves that the ‘60’s song was right,
everybody is doing the locomotion. In his original and insightful
book, Matt Wilkinson explains how from whirling bacteria to
wayfaring humans, the three-billion-year journey of life has
depended on the invention of many ways of moving.” —Sean B. Carroll, author of Brave Genius and The Serengeti Rules
