Photo, left: Sheridan's Ride, chromolithograph by Thure de Thulstrup.   According to some records concerning Sidnayah, daughter of Chief Quately of the Klickitats: “Sheridan lived with a mistress during part of his tour of duty, an Indian woman named Sidnayoh (called Frances by her white friends), daughter of the chief of the Klickitat Tribe.” Today, a century and half later, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde (at the north end of the original coastal reservation) also list one of their tribal members, the beautiful Harriet Lindsay, a Rogue River Indian of Chief George’s band, as Sheridan’s recognized common-law wife during the years 1856-1861, thereby granting Sheridan a kind of tribal membership in absentia.
