Photo, left: The heroes of Telemark saved the entire world from Schickelgruber’s madness in World War II when a group of Norwegian youths undertook an impossible endeavor in terrifying circumstances – and won.  The Nazi plan was to produce a atomic bomb; to do so they need heavy water, available only in Norway.  A group of young men succeeded against terrifying odds, in the depth of a sub-Arctic winter, in sinking the ferry that was finally transporting the heavy water south to a German lab.  Among the Norwegians to whom we all owe our freedom was Knut Klonteig, a teenaged participant in the gripping tale and a citizen of Telemark province where the drama took place.
In Norway, folk art holds a most esteemed position.   Rosemåling is the name of a traditional form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway; rosemåling is a style of Norwegian decorative painting on wood that uses stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns. Landscape and architectural elements are also common. The picture here is of rosemåling from a county adjacent to Telemark; the actual Telemark traditional designs are, perhaps, even more beautiful.
