Unconfirmed: The suspected deputy of al Qaeda was killed Feb. 26 in Idlib province, northern Syria, in what was likely a U.S. drone strike, according to social media reports. Images surfaced of a vehicle with a large hole in its roof, apparently from a targeted strike. The target, Abu Khayr al-Masri, was involved in a number of terrorist attacks over the years, including the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. The United States has been ramping up airstrikes on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an al Qaeda front in Syria and a group that has been attracting more recruits and other rebel groups into its orbit.

Can wreak havoc with precision fire, Mumbai-style operations in Europe and across the West.  Al Q ran two training camps in SE Afghanistan; one was called: The largest al Q camp since the US invaded; 30 sq mi.

They do fundraising for each other.  Obama Administration claimed that al Q was defeated but that was obviously flawed from the beginning. 
Syrian military intelligence official killed in suicide assault in Homs  Hay'at Tahrir al Sham (HTS), a newly formed group that includes al Qaeda's Syrian arm, launched a complex assault on the Assad regime's security services in the city of Homs earlier today. A high-ranking military intelligence official was killed in the suicide raid.
Taliban claims it downed Afghan helicopter The Afghan Ministry of Defense claimed the helicopter made an emergency landing due to a technical issue. In the past, the Afghan military has been less than forthcoming about attacks on its aviation assets and has even attempted to cover up the loss of its helicopters.
Treasury, UN sanction 2 senior leaders in al Qaeda’s Syrian branch   The US Treasury Department and the UN have added two senior jihadists to their terror sanctions lists. Both of them were leaders in the group formerly known as Al Nusrah Front, al Qaeda's official branch in Syria. Treasury's announcement provides new details about al Qaeda's operations in Syria, including the organization's history and personnel.
Iraq monument underscores Iranian commander’s role in Qods Force  A monument dedicated to an Iranian general has been erected in Iraq for the first time in the country’s modern history. The landmark commemorates Hamid Taghavi, a commander in the Qods Force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' extraterritorial branch.
Ex-Guantanamo detainee carried out suicide attack near Mosul, Iraq   A former Guantanamo detainee known as Jamal al Harith (formerly Ronald Fiddler) launched a suicide attack with a vehicle borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) south of Mosul earlier this week. He is at least the second former Guantanamo detainee to launch a suicide attack in or around Mosul on behalf of the Islamic

Scores of headstones were toppled in Philadelphia less than a week after a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis was desecrated. A Muslim activist stepped up to help with restoration efforts at both sites.

**A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Pietro Shakarian entered the PhD program in History at OSU in 2016. Prior to OSU, he earned his MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, his MLIS at Kent State University, and his BA in History at John Carroll University in Cleveland.
      With the aid of the Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Special Collection, Pietro republished rare books of historical interest on the Caucasus in the Tsarist and Soviet eras. These included Friedrich Parrot’s Journey to Ararat (1846), Baron August von Haxthausen’s Transcaucasia (1854-55), and Aghavnie Yeghenian’s The Red Flag of Ararat (1932). All three books were published by the Gomidas Institute in London. In addition, Pietro has written analyses on Russia and the former Soviet region for various news publications, including The Nation and Russia Direct, and he has appeared as a guest on The John Batchelor Show and other programs.
      His main interest is 19th and 20th century Russian and Eurasian history, with a focus on the history of the Caucasus region, particularly Armenia and Georgia.   https://history.osu.edu/people/shakarian.3
