100 Years of History Behind “Double Ten” Day of the R.O.C.,  by Ho Chie
It’s Double Ten in Taiwan, a national holiday, but it’s also recognized in China, Hong Kong, and US Chinatowns. Each year in Taiwan, October 10 is celebrated as the national day of the Republic of China (ROC).  Do you know the history behind this day or why several Chinatown communities in the United States also celebrate “Double Ten” day with parades and fanfare?
Here’s a brief history behind the founding of the Republic of China, when it was first established in China leading to the government that now resides on Taiwan.
October 10, 1911, marked the beginning of the military Wuchang Uprising (aka the start of the Hsinhai Revolution), as revolutionaries were upset over government corruption, the encroachment of foreign countries into China, and resentment over Manchu rule over Han Chinese. This day marked the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in China, thus ending thousands of years of imperial dynastic rule.
Sun Yat-sen, a Chinese doctor, revolutionary and political leader, played an influential role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and served briefly as the first president of the Republic of China when it was founded on January 1, 1912. As a proponent of Chinese nationalism, he actually spent much time in the West, and in 1894, founded the Revive China Society in Honolulu, Hawaii. One of his key political philosophies was known as the “Three Principles of the People” and revolved around ideals of nationalism, democracy, and the people’s livelihood. When the Republic of China government was first established, its first national flag was the “Five-Colored Flag” representing the five major nationalities of China: Han (red), Manchu (yellow), Mongol (blue), Hui (white), and Tibetan (black). It’s interesting to note that Sun Yat-sen believed the flag to be inappropriate due to its horizontal color ordering reminiscent of hierarchical class rule. But for 15 years, this flag represented a modern “Republican” post-imperial China.
How did the current day flag of the Republic of China come about? The design elements of the ROC flag actually existed before the Wuchang Uprising and the establishment of the ROC. The “Blue Sky with a White Sun” portion was a flag design itself and had been presented at a meeting of the Society for Regenerating China, an anti-Qing society based in Hong Kong, in February of 1895. This White Sun emblem would later be adopted by the Chinese Nationalist Party, the Kuomingtang (KMT), as its party flag and the Coat of Arms of the Republic of China. In 1906, the “red Earth” portion was added by Sun Yat-sen.
The period after the Wushang Uprising saw much political strife and . . .

Hour One
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 1, Block A: Tom Joscelyn, Long War Journal senior editor & FDD,  and Bill Roggio, Long War Journal senior editor  & FDD, in re: Al Qaeda is the mother ship; ISIS is a subtribe.  ISIS puts out infographics monthly; strong growth in martyrdom (782); but in Sept the number goes down to 53
Whereas 119 in May 2016. Haven’t kept the trendline moving up. Down in both Iraq and Syria. Ebb and flow in the fight; ISI grew fast initially, although some of the “martyrs” are children forced to blow themselves up.
State Dept annually gives suicide stats: in 2015, average of   61 suicide deaths per month; in 2016, 87.
Video taps of Afgh training camps; Taliban commanders: “We're part of he global jihad; Muslims across the world should be fighting for the ummah.”  For yeas, their English agitprop has been, “We don’t arm our neighbors; we’re just local activists”;  but in Farsi and Pashto and Arabic: “Yes, we're global.”
Good-quality video. Why do they wear masks?  Reminiscent o of early ISIS video – produced by Haqqani network video arm (close to al Q as well as Pakistani ISI).  Expect more slickly-produced vids.
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 1, Block B: Tom Joscelyn, Long War Journal senior editor & FDD,  and Bill Roggio, Long War Journal senior editor  & FDD, in re:  Al Qaeda & AQAP. Al Q has many subtribes; re-branding, Nusrah has rebranded, now another one rebrands itself to follow Nusrah. In 2011, when Assad rev gets in force, al Q senior leadership: no al Q branding in Syria to bring o scrutiny, so invent new names.”  In 2014, al Q has built up Al Nusrah, tries to arrogate it to keep itself from Baghdadi. The Infighting ‘twixt Nusrah ad Baghdadi; reveals that he’s loyal directly to Zawahiri; this upsets the apple cart In 2016, al Q thinks the ISIS menace has largely passed; so the revert to their original misnomers – their big army in Syria . . .
Junda al Aqsa (established to absorb defected ISIS fighters) now folds into the rebranded al Q branch in Syria.
Call yourself anything but stay faithful to the Prophet’s advice.  It's all always bee al Qaeda. On 28 June2016, McGuirk testifies: AL Q has it's largest affiliate in history in Syria reporting to Zawahiri; magically a month later they change names to hide.
The multiple sides n the Yemeni civil war. US targeting AQAP almost exclusively. Hitting midlevel commanders, AQAP took control of most of southern Yemen last year [the former Communist substate].  This year US is increasing number of air strikes.
“The Pentagon has confirmed that Ahmed Salama Mabrouk was killed in an Oct. 3 airstrike in Syria's Idlib province. According to Defense Department Press Secretary Peter Cook, Mabrouk was "one of Al Qaeda's most senior leaders" and his death is "a blow to their ability to plot external attacks." Mabrouk was one of the most senior officials in Jabhat Fath al Sham, al Qaeda's rebranded branch in Syria.  Mabrouk was in extraordinary rendition in Egypt, then released and rejoined the fight, A fullly-made man [Mafia phrase]; dangerous; sat at the podium when major announcements were made.  All theater, plus mass killings.
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 1, Block C: Gordon G. Chang, Daily Beast & Forbes.com, in re: Once gain. Reports of North Korea preparing for its sixth nuclear test and a long-range missile test. DPRK sells this stuff so need to be sure it works; and want a deterrent. 38North site (Johns Hopkins) says they buried the device a month ago; will do the test when it gives them the most leverage and fear.
US has given DPRK huge latitude; this is US fault, because China and DPRK have been playing Washington, obviously, and Washington has amazingly gone along with it.
South Koreans are sick of having South Koreans killed by North Korea; also they do not trust he US. You cannot run ineffective policy year in and year out without consequences – conservatives, GOP, Democrats: all have repeatedly failed the American people.  South Korea finally said, If DPRK is readying a nuke attack on us, we’ll obliterate Pyongyang first.
Philippines: Duterte breaks off all patrols and exercises with the US. At he direction of China? Not really; Duterte just doesn't like the US, will do this till he gets in trouble: then he’ll either run to the US or the Filipino people will get rid of him. Also is highly upset that US has criticized his “extrajudicial killing” of 3,500 Filipinos.
This jeopardizes all the countries in the region – and it's the First Island Chain.   Once China grabs Scarborough Shoal, Duterte will leave. When Philippines kicked US out of Subic Bay, China soon grabbed Mischief Reef.
Duterte currently is popular for killing drug lords, but when the effects start to trickle into large popular consciousness; and if trouble around losing Scarborough, he’ll be kicked out.
China welcomes foreign investment: new legislative guidelines because they need money badly.  Have to make it a tad easier for foreigners to invest. Li Kai-ching may lose his post.    . . . Apple has a good history of embarrassing Tim Cook.  Disaster in the not-distant future.

Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 1, Block D:  Steve Herman, VOA diplomatic chief correspondent;  in re: To missiles released from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen and nearly hit a US destroyer, the USS Mason.   Recall the USS Cole; here we go again, although Houthis are Iranian-backed.  US issues an announcement: “US commanders posses the power to exercise self-defense and will do so when needed.”   VOA report on Yemen: UN called Saudi bombing of a Yemeni funeral “heartless”; community center; many women and children (541) killed, with many more wounded.  Some killed were advocates of peace, could have put a peace pact in to effect – but now they're dead. Sanaa is a state within a state: elements from North & South crammed together. Elected governor long ago fled.  Thousands demonstrated on Sunday.  Washington’s support for Saudi refuelling is critical. Yemen is like Syria in that it’s not a binary war; Yemenis, ISIS, al Qaeda, Iran – complicated with shifting loyalties.  Plus Saudis with five Gulf states, incl Sudan.
Thousands Protest in Yemen Against Deadly Airstrikes  Thousands of marchers took to the streets of Yemen's capital, Sana'a, Sunday to protest an ... ; The U.S. military says two missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen in the direction of a U.S. ship in the Persian Gulf.
Officials say the two missiles, launched over a 60-minute period, landed in the water Sunday, but did not make contact with the USS Mason.
"There were no injuries to our sailors and no damage to the ship. We assess the missiles were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen," Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said.
It was not immediately clear whether the U.S. destroyer was the intended target of the two missiles.
"In the first instance USS Mason employed onboard defensive measures, although it is unclear whether this led to the missile striking the water or whether it would have struck the water anyway," a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity.
The official said the incident remains under investigation.  (VOA Pentagon correspondent Carla Babb contributed to this report.)  http://www.voanews.com/a/missiles-fired-near-us-ship-in-yemen/3543770.html ; Missiles Fired near US Ship in Yemen ; UN Chief: Saudi Strike on Yemeni Funeral 'Outrageous Violation'

Hour Two
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 2, Block A: David M Drucker, Washington Examiner Senior Congressional correspondent; John Fund, NRO, in re: D J Trump’s unacceptable and violent language from eleven year s ago; 24 hours later, Judd Gray (NH): “It's every man for him- or herself today.” One candidate threatens to jail the other; one making a slight comment of appalling video; unprecedented in US history – nothing on this scale.  Waterloo; save yourself; run.
GOP threatens to yean all support from downticket?  Ryan: If you need to cut Trump loose, go ahead.  “I saw nothing on stage that‘ll grow DJT’s 35% base.  What was he doing?”  His natural instinct is always to attack. The drop in his poll numbers will stabilize at a lower number. Money probably will dwindle or dry up. Likely that he’ll lose. Rather than becoming a hero to the Party (“If you vote for me I’ll step aside for Pence”), he sinks the ship with no lifeboats for the crew.
Trump’s repulsive remarks: in future, any candidate, what's the statute of imitations for being a misogynistic jackass?
Easy oppo research on Trump.  And he didn't immed disavow the KKK, and never did for calling Rosie O’Donnell a dog. Civil war.  His nonapology apology was exactly what everyone thought of him.  This is hardly an isolated event; there’ll be more takes emerging.  Expect this s the beginning of a series of releases.  No one believes he’s never accosted a woman without her permission.

Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 2, Block B: John Fund, NRO, and David M Drucker, Washington Examiner Senior Congressional correspondent; in re: Chappaquiddick! Last night, Mrs Clintons strategy was to take the punches, which she did smoothly, Fairly successful. She did a rope-a-dope”: let Trump be Trump and talk. No benefit to responding.  She just let criticisms exist as if they don’t matter. You need to win, but really you need to make sure her base is excited and energized and happy with her.  Her only problem will be if they don't turn out.
Trump Tower thinks if you can make her as unpopular as Kennedy at Chappaquiddick, you can win.  However she projects more calm and a better temperament. Is there anything that can stop Mrs Clinton now? Yes, she could stop herself; or if something emerges that seriously contradicts data on email of the Clinton Fdn – so explosive and criminal – cd flip the race upside down. By Nov 8, 40% of the battlegrounds will have voted.  Or maybe a major terrorist attack.  Wikileaks.  She could have lost to any Republican with a pulse, she’s blessed with the one candidate she can beat.
Will the GOP break up? Yes.  . . . Will it control both the House and the  Senate?  Mrs Clinton will unite the GOP the moment she enters office
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 2, Block C: John Tamny, Political Economy editor at Forbes, editor of RealClearMarkets, a senior economic adviser to Toreador Research & Trading, senior Fellow in economics at Reason Foundation; author of  Who Needs the Fed? and Popular Economics; in re:  . . .  If someone makes, say, $100 million. If you give it to the government, the govt will spend it on governmental endeavors (bureaucracies, digging holes and filing them up, etc), but if you put it in a bank, it gets recycled into car loans, home loans, investment in start-ups.  Tax increases hand power to the fed govt.  When people keep more of their money, they can take risks with part of it.  A tax on wealth is a tax on jobs.  Wells Fargo: will there be an arrest?
Monday 10 October 2016 / Hour 2, Block D:  John Tamny, Political Economy editor at Forbes, editor of RealClearMarkets, a senior economic adviser to Toreador Research & Trading, senior Fellow in economics at Reason Foundation; author of  Who Needs the Fed? and Popular Economics; in re:   There are pundits writing against free trade; a revolt in the commentariat? Yes; what used to be good is not today because other countries have dvpd more competitive strength.  Why do we go to work? To get what we don’t have. An economy is a collection of individuals; Hazlett said: what’s unfortunate for an individual must be equally so for a collection of individuals who make up a nation;  imagine you have the most talented people on Earth competing to meet  you needs. What makes this unrelentingly spectacular is hat we have a chance to do work that we do best. The punditry have it backwards. Americans are the most productive workers on Earth, the biggest importer. Tariffs shrink global mkts for producers – we have the most valuable companies (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, etc).   . . .  free trade elevates the American economy because it elevates the individuals within it.  . . . if we want to create a lot of jobs, let's just abolish the tractor. Suddenly we didn’t have to spend every hour of every day producing food. When you destroy unnecessary forms of work, you can work at what you're good at.  . . .  With free trade, we don’t need central bankers!   http://www.realclearmarkets.com/articles/2016/10/04/all_sides_should_cheer_trumps_tax_avoidance_102371.html  ; http://www.forbes.com/sites/johntamny/2016/10/09/there-are-no-myths-or-e...
