Shining Winter Maze.
Colleague Simon Constable, DowJones, leads David Wessel, WSJ, through the maze of possibilities in front of the Senate in order to assemble 60 votes to break the GOP filibuster. The public option in the Democratic desired outcome. And the solution suggested here is the United States of Olympia Snowe, once more. All avenues of the healthcare reform maze lead to the United States of Olympia Snowe by herself in what I picture as a scenario like the blizzard blowing late in Stanley Kubrick's masterful version of Stephen King's "The Shining." Will Senator Snowe lead the Democrats throught the tricky passages to 60 votes? It is the only credible explanation for success, and it may be the future; but not until after the State of the Union, perhaps not until February. Long winter, snowy wind, Jack Nicholson searching for Olympia (Shelley Duvall) Snowe. "Here's Johnny!"

David Wessel is being kind when he says that passage of the health care bill will involve some kind of 'compromise'. I believe the correct word is 'bribe'.
